Sauna Thermometers, Hygrometers and Sand Timers: What Do You Need?
Choose readable sauna gauges and sand timers. Learn what each measures, how placement differs and why accessory operating limits matter.

Three familiar sauna accessories answer three different questions. A thermometer shows temperature at its location. A hygrometer indicates humidity. A sand timer helps you keep track of elapsed time.
None of them, by itself, decides whether the conditions are suitable for a particular person. Their value is more practical: clear information makes it easier to understand your sauna and notice when something has changed.
Choose a readable display
Before comparing frames, think about where you will read the instrument. A small dial may look tidy on a product page and be difficult to see from the opposite bench. Check the overall diameter, number size, contrast and whether the scale uses Celsius, Fahrenheit or both.
ZAPARA's sauna thermometers, clocks and sand timers include separate timers and combined temperature-and-humidity instruments. A combined dial can save wall space, but each scale still needs to be legible from where you sit.
For humidity, the term to look for is hygrometer. A hydrometer measures a liquid's density; it is a different instrument. Some retail titles use the wrong word, so check the actual dial and description rather than relying on the product name alone.
Placement depends on the instrument
Follow the instructions for the precise instrument you buy. TESLI's D165 thermohygrometer guidance specifies a position at least 2 m from the stove and entrance door. Other products use different wording. Rento recommends positioning its Harri Koskinen thermometer high on the wall, away from the heater, where it is easy to read. This is a product-specific direction, not a replacement for TESLI's instructions. Rento thermometer placement.
Plan the location before making holes. If the instructions cannot be met, ask the supplier to recommend a suitable instrument or approved alternative position. Moving the heater's control sensor to make its display agree with a decorative wall dial is not a calibration method; leave that sensor in the location required by the heater system.
Check a sand timer's limits
The appeal of a sand timer is simple: it needs no battery and is easy to glance at. It still has operating limits.
TESLI's official page for its thermo wood hourglass specifies a 15-minute scale with 5-minute marks, an operating range of 0–80°C, protection from direct water contact and minimum distances from heat sources and doors. The 80°C figure is the accessory's operating limit, not a recommended sauna temperature. Check the current instructions and confirm that the mounting position complies. The TESLI sand timer listed by ZAPARA is worth considering when you want visible timekeeping without a phone. Remember that its full scale is a measurement range. It does not mean everyone should remain in the sauna until the sand runs out.
Make comparisons useful
If you are concerned about a reading, note where the instrument is mounted, how long the room has been heating and whether water was recently applied to the stones. Comparing two readings taken in different places or at different moments tells you little about which device needs attention.
Follow the instrument maker's checking or calibration procedure. Avoid improvised boiling-water, freezer or salt tests unless that procedure is specifically approved for the device. A stuck pointer or a timer that stops flowing is a reason to contact the supplier, not something to work around by tapping it indefinitely.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need both a thermometer and a hygrometer?
A combined instrument is useful if you want to observe both conditions. Choose it for readable information, not because an extra dial can automatically control the room.
Why does my heater controller show a different temperature?
The controller sensor and wall instrument may be in different locations and use different measurement systems. Check both sets of instructions before assuming either is faulty.
Is 15 minutes the correct sauna session length?
The timer does not establish that. Its scale records elapsed time. Leave whenever you need to; there is no need to finish a timer cycle.
Where should I mount a timer in a small sauna?
Choose a readable position that meets that timer's operating limits and required distances. If your room cannot accommodate the specified placement, ask the supplier about a suitable alternative before buying or drilling mounting holes.
