Care for the wood that makes your sauna. Explore ALIS for exterior cladding and MELDOS for interior softwood, with colours and sizes for your next project.
The outside of an outdoor sauna faces sun and rain; the interior needs care suited to its timber and use. Treat these as separate surfaces when planning your finish. A colour that suits the exterior does not automatically belong inside.
Whether you are choosing an outdoor sauna or working with sauna lumber, identify the wood species first. Then check any existing finish and try the oil on a small, prepared area before committing to the whole sauna.
Separate exterior cladding from interior walls, ceilings and seating. Follow the sauna maker’s recommendations for each surface, including any areas that should remain untreated.
02 / PREPARATION
Check the timber.
Note the species, condition and previous coating. The right preparation and a small test application reveal how the oil absorbs and how the colour looks on your sauna.
03 / APPLICATION
Allow time to finish.
Use the instructions for your exact product and application. Measure the area, plan drying time and ventilation, and let the treatment finish drying before using the sauna.
Sauna wood care, explained
Questions about sauna oil.
Which oil should I use for sauna wood?+
Start with the surface: ALIS 579 is the exterior option for solid-wood sauna cladding, while MELDOS 264 is the interior option for compatible solid softwoods. Check the wood species, any existing coating and your sauna maker’s instructions before choosing.
How many coats of sauna wood oil should I apply?+
We recommend at least two coats for ALIS outside and MELDOS inside, with approximately 24 hours after the first application before the second, following advice from the Canadian LIVOS representative. Drying depends on conditions; follow the supplied instructions and allow full drying before sauna use.
Is sauna wood oil the same as an essential oil?+
No. These products are wood finishes applied to suitable timber. They are not sauna fragrances and must not be added to sauna water or poured onto heater stones.
Does every sauna interior need to be oiled?+
No. The right care routine depends on the sauna maker, wood species and surface. Some interiors are intended to remain untreated. Confirm the recommended finish before applying oil, especially to benches and backrests.
Can I use one oil inside and outside the sauna?+
Choose for the environment rather than using one product throughout. Sun and weather affect the exterior; inside, the wood species and sauna-specific application instructions matter. These two LIVOS oils have different intended uses.
How do I choose a colour for an outdoor sauna?+
Test a sample on the same timber and preparation as your sauna. ALIS offers 23 colours. Pigmented colours are the relevant choice for UV-exposed wood; 002 Clear has no UV protection and 004 Natural has limited UV protection.
