Know your finish

A clear finish for interior sauna softwood.

Interior sauna use
For compatible interior solid softwoods, including cedar, pine and fir. Check your sauna maker’s recommendations for the exact surface before treatment.
Appearance
Clear to slightly honey-toned, with a pronounced grain-enhancing effect. A clear finish is not invisible: test it on your own timber first.
Wood limitations
Do not assume suitability for hardwoods such as basswood, aspen or alder. The manufacturer also excludes wood floors and certain cabinetry applications. Confirm any bench or backrest treatment specifically.
Sauna application
A minimum of two coats is recommended, with about 24 hours between applications. Apply and remove surplus oil as directed on the product instructions. Let the first coat dry before recoating, and keep the sauna well ventilated.
After treatment
Let the treatment dry completely before using the sauna. The interval between coats is not the same as the final drying time. Follow the supplied product instructions for ventilation and first use.

Based on LIVOS Canada’s MELDOS coverage calculator: 5.58 mL per sq ft for the first coat and 2.79 mL per sq ft for the second. For compatible interior solid softwoods; confirm the species and surface first. Additional coats require more oil. Wood texture, preparation and absorption affect actual coverage; test a small area first.

Sauna-specific application

How to oil suitable sauna interior wood.

01 / CONFIRM

Check species and surface.

Identify the wood and follow the sauna maker’s care recommendations. MELDOS is an option for compatible solid softwoods; it is not a universal finish for every sauna interior.

02 / APPLY

Apply at least two coats.

Follow the supplied instructions for application and removal of surplus oil. Allow approximately 24 hours after the first coat before applying the second, making sure the surface is ready to recoat.

03 / DRY

Finish before you heat.

Give the final coat time to dry completely and ventilate the sauna as instructed. Approximately 24 hours is the planned gap between coats, not a promise that the sauna is ready to use.

Before you begin

A few helpful details

Interior sauna oil questions.

Can MELDOS 264 be used inside a sauna?

Yes. LIVOS includes sauna use in its instructions for this interior solid-softwood oil. Follow the sauna-specific application method and check the wood species and surface with your sauna maker.

Is MELDOS suitable for cedar sauna wood?

Cedar is among the softwoods listed for MELDOS, along with pine and fir. Confirm that the surface is solid wood and suitable for treatment, then test a small area to see the colour and absorption.

Can I use it on sauna benches or backrests?

Do not choose by the word “sauna” alone. Bench timber may be a hardwood such as aspen or alder, which falls outside the stated softwood use. Confirm the exact species, surface and recommended treatment with the sauna and oil manufacturers.

Will a clear sauna oil change the wood colour?

Yes. MELDOS can add a slight honey tone and deepen the grain. The effect varies with the timber and preparation. Review a dried sample if you want to preserve a particular look.

How do I apply MELDOS in a sauna?

Plan at least two coats with approximately 24 hours between them, following the Canadian LIVOS representative’s recommendation. Prepare the wood, apply and remove surplus oil as instructed, and allow complete drying and ventilation before sauna use.

Should I add wax, or use MELDOS outside?

Keep the sauna treatment simple and do not add a wax or other topcoat unless it is specifically recommended for your surface. For outdoor sauna cladding, explore ALIS 579 exterior wood oil instead.

MELDOS 264Application guide

For suitable solid softwoods inside your sauna, including cedar, pine and fir.

Minimum 2 coats Recommended application~24 hours Between coats
  1. Check the wood and prepare

Confirm the surface with your sauna maker. Start with clean, dry, suitably sanded timber and remove dust. Test a small area: the oil enriches the grain and can deepen its colour.

  2. Apply the first coat

Stir thoroughly and spread the oil evenly over the prepared wood. Remove surplus oil as directed on the container, leaving no pools or tacky build-up.

  3. Wait about 24 hours, then recoat

Let the first coat dry before applying a thin second coat. Wipe away surplus oil and keep the space ventilated. Allow more time if the surface is not ready to recoat.

  4. Dry fully before sauna use

Allow complete drying and follow the supplied instructions for ventilation and first use. The interval between coats is separate from the final drying time.

Based on the recommendation from the Canadian LIVOS representative. Follow the label supplied with your product for application and drying conditions.
