Sauna exterior use
For outer sauna walls and solid-wood cladding, following the application guidance for your supplied product. Also suitable for compatible wooden steps or a wooden deck beside the sauna, using the instructions for that surface.
Wood & preparation
Start with dry, sound, absorbent wood. Check compatibility with the species and any previous coating; prepare and test the surface before treating the whole sauna.
Colour & UV
Choose a pigmented colour for wood exposed to sunlight. 002 Clear provides no UV protection; 004 Natural provides limited UV protection.
Cladding application
A minimum of two coats is recommended, with approximately 24 hours after the first application before the second. Let the first coat dry and follow the supplied product instructions; temperature, humidity and absorption affect the interval.
Ongoing care
Inspect exposed areas as part of your sauna care routine. Clean and maintain the finish when its condition calls for it; weather, orientation and surface texture affect maintenance needs.

Based on LIVOS Canada’s coverage of 50–100 sq ft per litre for two coats. Suggested containers cover the higher oil estimate. Additional coats require more oil. Wood texture, preparation and absorption affect actual coverage; test a small area first.

Sauna-specific application

Prepare and oil your sauna cladding.

01 / CHECK

Know the existing finish.

Check that the wood is suitable, dry and absorbent. Existing coatings may need removal or specific preparation. Follow the technical data sheet rather than simply oiling over an unknown finish.

02 / TEST

Choose colour on your wood.

Make a test area using the same surface preparation as the whole sauna. Review the dried appearance before you settle on a colour and quantity.

03 / APPLY

Plan at least two coats.

Apply the first coat following the product instructions, then allow about 24 hours before the second. Confirm that the surface is dry enough to recoat; cooler or more humid conditions can extend the wait.

A few helpful details

Exterior sauna oil questions.

How long should I wait between coats?

Plan approximately 24 hours after the first coat before applying the second, following the recommendation from the Canadian LIVOS representative. The surface must be ready to recoat; temperature, humidity and wood absorption can change the drying time.

Can I use ALIS 579 on the exterior of a sauna?

ALIS is intended for exterior solid wood, including façades. That makes exterior sauna cladding an appropriate use to assess, provided the timber, preparation and existing finish meet the manufacturer’s instructions. It is not an interior sauna treatment.

Is ALIS only a decking oil?

Although the original product packaging says “Natural Oil for Decking,” LIVOS also specifies exterior façades. This page focuses on outer sauna walls and cladding. Confirm preparation and application for that timber with the instructions supplied for your product.

Which colour should I choose for my sauna exterior?

Choose on the actual wood, not the screen alone. Species, sanding and previous treatments change the result. For sunlight-exposed cladding, consider a pigmented colour: Clear has no UV protection and Natural has limited protection.

How much oil will my outdoor sauna need?

Measure the timber area and note whether it is rough, planed or sanded. Plan for at least two coats, then use the product coverage guidance and a test application to confirm quantity. The calculator estimates the two-coat minimum; additional coats require more oil. Rough or absorbent timber can need more oil than a smooth surface.

Can I use ALIS inside the sauna as well?

Use a finish intended for the interior surface. MELDOS 264 is the LIVOS option here for compatible solid-softwood sauna interiors. Confirm the specific wood and surface before applying it.

Minimum 2 coats Recommended application~24 hours Between coats
  1. Prepare and test

Clean the timber and let it dry. Prepare any existing finish as directed, sand where needed and remove dust. Test the colour on a small area of the same wood.

  2. Apply the first coat

Choose dry weather above 10°C and work out of direct sunlight. Stir the oil well, brush it on evenly and remove unabsorbed oil as directed on the container.

  3. Wait about 24 hours, then recoat

Check that the first coat is dry before applying a thin second coat. Remove any excess. Cool or humid conditions can extend the drying time.
