Unlike knotty cedar, which creates a rustic appearance with prominent natural knots, clear cedar produces cleaner lines and a more refined architectural finish. The smoother and more consistent face makes it particularly suitable for seating, back-contact areas and other components that sauna users regularly touch.

Clear 2×4 Western Red Cedar is widely used as dedicated sauna bench material. SaunaFin specifies 2×4 clear cedar for bench tops, including in sauna kits with knotty cedar wall paneling, while other sauna-wood suppliers sell clear S4SEE 2×4 cedar specifically for benches, skirts and floor surfaces.

Clear-grade terminology is not completely interchangeable. Real Cedar describes clear material as having a limited number of natural characteristics and being specified where high-quality appearance is important. A Clear is a recognized fine appearance grade, while individual suppliers may use A&BTR or proprietary specifications.
