Unlike knotty cedar, which provides a more rustic and traditional cabin appearance, Clear Western Red Cedar creates a polished architectural finish. Its relatively consistent grain and minimal knot presence make it especially suitable for modern home saunas, luxury wellness rooms, commercial spas and other interiors where a sophisticated cedar appearance is desired.

Clear cedar is generally selected for premium applications where appearance is a major consideration. Industry grading information describes clear Western Red Cedar as having limited natural characteristics and being suitable for high-end, formal applications, although the exact permitted characteristics depend on the assigned lumber grade.

Premium A & Better Clear Grade

These boards are supplied in A & Better Clear grade, commonly abbreviated as A&BTR. This premium appearance grade provides a clean, predominantly clear face with considerably fewer knots and visual interruptions than Tight Knot cedar.

The clear surface allows the natural grain, colour transitions and fine texture of Western Red Cedar to become the primary design features. Individual boards may range from lighter straw and amber tones to pinkish red, reddish brown and deeper cedar shades, creating subtle natural variation without the strongly rustic appearance of knotty lumber.

Canadian cedar manufacturers use A&BTR clear grades for premium sauna paneling and high-end interior applications. Cedarland, for example, lists A&BTR Clear among its sauna and paneling grades and describes it as a high-end appearance product.
