Sauna Stones: How to Choose, Load and Replace Them

Buying sauna stones starts with one detail: the exact heater model. A stone that suits one heater can be the wrong size or shape for another, even when both heaters have the same power rating. The manual should tell you what to buy, how much you need and how to arrange the stones.

That makes this a useful maintenance job to plan before the next sauna evening. Check the instructions, order the appropriate stones, and leave enough time to work with a completely cold heater.

Start with the heater, then choose the stones

Write down four things: permitted stone material, diameter range, total stone mass and any special loading instructions. Keep the box label until installation is complete so you can check what actually arrived.

Why one stone size does not fit every heater

HUUM's published stone requirements illustrate the difference. Its CLIFF uses stones around 3–5 cm in diameter, while its CORE uses 5–10 cm stones. Stone shape needs the same attention. A rounded-stone recommendation for one heater should not override another heater's instructions for angular stones. Choose appearance only after compatibility is settled.

When comparing sauna heaters, ask whether the quoted package includes the complete required stone load. A low heater price is difficult to compare with a package price until that detail is clear. For an existing heater, buy replacement stones by its specification rather than trying to match the colour of an old, weathered stone.

Load the stones patiently

The exact arrangement comes from the model manual. HUUM's electric-heater support guidance includes rinsing off dust and placing stones individually instead of tipping a box into the heater. Before beginning, let the heater cool fully and isolate its power supply as directed by its instructions. Have a stable container ready for the removed stones and protect the surrounding floor from grit. Do not dismantle electrical components to make loading easier.

Work slowly enough to see where each stone rests. If a stone fits only when pushed hard, stop and choose another suitable stone. Never use an element as a lever or force it sideways to create a gap. Photograph the finished arrangement for your maintenance record. The image can be useful when discussing a concern with the supplier, but it does not replace an installer or manufacturer's assessment.

Inspect according to use, not just the calendar

Repeated heating and cooling can break down stones, and fragments can accumulate below the visible surface. HUUM currently recommends inspection at 100 operating hours, rearrangement and replacement of damaged stones at 200 hours, and full replacement at 400 hours. Keep a simple record of operating hours or heating sessions alongside the purchase date. A sauna used regularly at a cottage can reach its maintenance interval faster during one busy season than a lightly used home sauna does over many months.

During the inspection required by your manual, check the whole stone bed. Remove debris as instructed and replace damaged stones with matching approved replacements. Topping up the visible layer without examining what is underneath can leave the original problem in place.

If heating remains abnormal after maintenance, arrange a heater assessment. Stone condition is only one possible cause of a heating problem.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use river rocks in a sauna heater?

Use stones sold for sauna heaters and approved for your model. The fact that a rock came from water does not establish its suitability for repeated heating.

How many boxes should I order?

Divide the specified stone mass by the mass per box, then round up to whole boxes. Confirm the required size range too. Any spare stones remain spares; do not overfill the heater to use them up.

Should I replace every stone at once?

Follow the model's maintenance schedule. Some inspections involve replacing damaged stones; a full replacement interval is a separate instruction. If the history of a second-hand heater is unknown, ask the manufacturer how to establish a reliable starting point.

Can washing make old stones usable again?

Cleaning can remove loose dust, but it does not repair cracks or restore a crumbling stone. Assess condition and follow the replacement requirements for your heater instead of treating a cleaner appearance as proof of suitability.
